With the blessing and guidance of His Eminence Metropolitan MAXIMOS of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Pittsburgh, St. Mary of Egypt was established in 1992 in the heart of Cleveland, Ohio. The mission was registered as a non-profit corporation in the State of Ohio in 1993 "to provide charitable and humane assistance to the needy."
Over a 20-year period, St. Mary of Egypt has been designated as “Orthodox Women’s Sanctuary,” “Orthodox Mission,” “Orthodox Mission and Monastery,” and “Orthodox Monastery” (2005-2014). In its time as a monastery, St. Mary of Egypt provided hospitality to guests, refugees, and travelers from around the world. In 2014, St. Mary of Egypt resumed the name of "Mission," continuing with the founding purpose of serving the poor and providing help to the needy of our community through charitable outreach.
St. Mary of Egypt has received Proclamations from the Mayors of Cleveland (7) and the Governors of Ohio (3), honoring our commitment to the community. More than 250,000 individuals and families have received humanitarian aid. In partnership with the Greater Cleveland Food Bank since 1997, St. Mary of Egypt has distributed more than 800,000 lbs. of food, and has been commended by that agency for its achievements in volume of food distributed and for its faithfulness to the community. Food is purchased from the Food Bank and donated by caring people, like you. Thank You!
